You are a construction worker halfway up a skyscraper that has gone wrong: the site robots are loose, the sky is on fire, and there is a briefcase waiting on floor 48. The only way through a robot is over the top of it: jump, land on its head, flatten it.
Flatten Frenzy is a tribute to Squish'em (Sirius Software, 1983, Commodore 64), which gave whoever was there hours of frenzy: 48 floors, a zig-zag climb, enemies you defeat by landing on them, objects raining down. It keeps the pace and the hurry: a run lasts a few minutes, asks for nothing before it starts and holds nobody once it ends.
Everything else is rebuilt: modern controls, district progression, flat contemporary shapes, an 8-bit soundtrack at 150 BPM synthesised sample by sample as you play, gaining a layer with every district. No ads, no in-app purchases, no account, no connection: you open it and you play, the way you did in front of a cabinet.
Six minutes to reach floor 48. The clock sits bottom right, turns red under a minute and flashes under ten seconds. To buy more there is an alarm clock falling from the sky: thirty seconds, handed over even to whoever takes it on the head.
Dying has its price too. Resuming from a checkpoint costs points, at a price that grows with the district, so climbing safely does not earn enough to afford it. The clock does not rewind when you resume: die on floor 46 with five seconds left and you come back with five seconds, and you decide whether it was worth it.
The sky changes every twelve floors. A boss drone is waiting at the end of each district.
They are told apart by shape before colour: that is the rule the game set itself, and it is checked by playing with the colour switched off.
Pep or Ada, chosen at the top of OPTIONS. Same height, same jump, same hitbox: it is who you are, not how you play.
Hammers, bricks, energy cells and money bags drop from above, each one telegraphed just long enough to dodge. Ladders are safe from robots, not from hazards.
A first aid kit every few floors gives a life back; an alarm clock buys thirty seconds. Both land and sit there for a moment, so crossing a beam to reach one is a decision.
Hold down away from a ladder and you duck under a drone. Stand back up inside one and you flatten it: it is a matter of posture more than timing.
Floors are generated from a seed, so no two runs are laid out the same.
One seed derived from the date: the same tower for everyone, every day, always on hard.
Variable-height jump, coyote time, jump buffering, generous stomp tolerance. The jump was tuned before anything else was built.
Every stomp raises the multiplier up to x10. A few seconds without one and it drops back to x1, while chaining floor after floor scores many times as much.
You take the briefcase, then ride a parachute down past the floors you just climbed, the way it worked in 1983.

The remote surface is read relatively: what counts is the offset from wherever your thumb lands, not where the thumb is. For a long run you swipe from edge to edge; lifting the finger resets it. A gamepad works on every platform, Apple TV included.
